Columbia's Trouble Building a Web site

One of the challenges of building a large Web site is getting the technical people to work with the graphic design and marketing people.  The city of Columbia, SC recently experienced this exact problem when the technical department unveiled their $107,000 web site just days before the marketing department was planning to launch their own $10,000 redesign of the site.

This appears to be a management issue.  It is a classic example of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.  If the technical work was done right, the presentation of the information should be separate and distinct from the information itself.  If they have a good technical team, it should require very little effort to adapt their new technical capabilities (paying bills online) to the new design.

A quality, fully functional Web site requires both technical expertise and functional and graphic design capabilities.  I hope that in the future these groups can work closely together for the city of Columbia.
