Facebook for Business

Facebook’s December algorithm change has cut the reach of brand pages nearly 50% in their never-ending push to get page owners to “boost” their posts.  Boosting a post is a cute slogan that means paying Facebook to publish your post in the news feed of your fans.

Until recently, Facebook’s algorithm consisted of analyzing how many people interact with a post on your business page by liking, commenting or sharing it.  The quantity of interaction would determine how visible that post would be in the newsfeed of your fans.  This was a fun system.  Page owners had to get creative luring their fans into interaction.  For me, as the manager of my customers’ Facebook pages, this creative challenge was invigorating.

Facebook made some significant changes to the Facebook Promotion Guidelines that, frankly, many small businesses were ignoring anyway.

The terms and conditions have often been overlooked and/or difficult to understand for the average mom and pop store owner.  I've spent a great deal of time trying to remind small business owners that they can't run promotions on their Facebook page without an app.  Then they show me examples of many Facebook pages doing exactly that and my only response is to shrug, "Try it."

Update, 10/11/2011:   Facebook has postponed the beta version of timeline after Timeline.com filed a lawsuit. Timeline is currently only available to those who have Facebook’s Developer application installed.

Sure.... your customers like you.

Your friends like you.

Your mom likes you.

But does Facebook like you?

Edgerank is Facebook's way of "liking" you.  Edgerank is a search ranking algorithm designed to help Facebook choose which posts should be placed on a person's feed.

Creating a business page and updating your status does not necessarily mean all your fans will see that status update in their wall feed. The default view for all personal facebook accounts is the Top News view rather than the Most Recent view.  The Top News will show the updates that Facebook has determined the viewer is most interested in.
